The defence yesterday began rebutting the arguments of the government in the war crimes appeals case of Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
SM Shahjahan, lawyer of the death row convict, put forward his counter arguments before the apex court’s five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain. Later, the Appellate Division adjourned hearing until April 15.
The defence lawyer yesterday said the government could not produce a single document in support of their claim that Delawar Shikdar took the name Sayedee after the Liberation War.
The attorney general on Thursday completed his arguments on behalf of the government pleading for upholding the death penalty for Sayedee handed down to him by the International Crimes Tribunal.
Placing arguments in the appeal case began on January 28. The International Crimes Tribunal on February 28 last year gave death sentence to Sayedee for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Both Sayedee and government appealed against the judgement.
