A land broker was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in front of his residence at Kantasur in the capital’s Mohammadpur yesterday morning.
The deceased was identified as Anisur Rahman.
Quoting witnesses and local people, Mohammadpur police station’s Sub-Inspector Tamal said miscreants came in front of Anis’ house on a motorcycle, shot him around 7:30am, and sped away. The 45-year-old was returning home after leaving his children at school.
Locals took the bullet-hit man to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead around 8:30am.
Hailing from Sirajnagar of Atibazar in Keraniganj, Anis had been residing in a flat on the first floor of a building at West Kantasur of Basila since March 1 this year. He is survived by his wife Ismat Ara; daughter Anita, 11; and son Anik, 6.
Ismat Ara demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.
Rahima Begum, a tenant of the building, said she had heard several gunshots outside the house at the time of the killing.
“As we opened the door, we found him lying on the ground”, she said.
Anis’ next-door neighbour Maksuda Akhter said: “There were two masked people. One of them was sitting on the motorbike while the other fired several shots at Anisur.
“When Anisur fell on the ground, the perpetrators drove away,” she said.
Apart from working as a land broker, Anisur was involved with an association representing traders of a market in Satmasjid Road. His maternal uncle Sirajuddin owned the association.
He earlier had a window grill business.
Family members and relatives said Anisur had purchased a piece of land in Ashulia with the money of the association. He, however, sold the land for Tk2.5 crore following a feud with some people in Ashulia.
Sub-inspector Mahbubur Rahman of Mohammadpur police station said Anisur might have been killed because of the feud over the sale of the land.
