Case against Khaleda on ‘first president’ claim dismissed

Update : 31 Mar 2014, 08:49 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday dismissed a case hours after it was filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for claiming that the party’s founder Ziaur Rahman was the first president of the country.

Metropolitan Magistrate Shamsul Arefin dismissed the case as there were no specific grounds for the allegation.

AB Siddique, president of Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, a pro- Awami League organisation, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka this morning.

The move comes a day after the lawmakers at the Sunday’s parliament session agreed to take actions against the BNP chief for deliberately distorting the history.

In the case statement, the plaintiff mentioned that on March 27 BNP Chief Khaleda Zia termed Ziaur Rahaman the first president of Bangladesh while speaking as the chief guest at a programme of Jatiyatabadi Muktijoddha Dal marking the Independence Day.

Such comments defamed Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman worldwide, Siddique alleged.

The plaintiff also mentioned that earlier on December 29 Khaleda Zia said the name of Gopalganj district would be changed… and the district would cease to exist.

The BNP chairperson made the remarks for defaming the birthplace of the father of the nation, added the plaintiff.

He appealed to the court to issue an arrest warrant against Khaleda after taking the charges into cognisance.

Earlier On December 31, AB Siddique had filed a case against Khaleda for her remark on Gopalganj district that caused a stir.

Later, Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Asaduzzaman Nur dismissed the case, saying a magistrate court had no jurisdiction to try a person accused of violating the constitution which was brought in the case.
