Two probe bodies formed over Jamuna Oil depot fire

Two separate probe bodies were formed yesterday over the fire incident at the depot of state-run Jamuna Oil Company Limited in the port city’s Patenga Friday evening.

Nasrul Hamid Bipu, state minister of the Ministry for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, visited the affected area of the depot and the injured workers in Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday morning.

The state minister also asked the medical authorities to ensure the best treatment for the injured.Jamuna would bear all medical expenses for the injured, he said.

Expressing deep concern, the state minister said strict action would be taken against those who would be found responsible for such a big accident after enquiry. Nine employees of the depot received severe burn injuries in the fire at the depot.

Dr Mishma Islam of Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of CMCH said five of the injured were in critical condition.

Md Eunusur Rahman, chairman of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), told the Dhaka Tribune BPC formed a five-member probe committee led by its director (marketing) SM Rejoan Hossain to investigate the matter while the probe body was asked to submit the report within Monday.

Besides, Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities formed another three-member probe committee led by its Assistant Director Mohammad Yiahia of Chittagong Headquarters to look into the matter and it would hopefully submit the report within seven days, said Md Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Chittagong.
