Escaped accused leave police clueless

Update : 25 Feb 2014, 08:50 PM

Police have very little clue regarding the whereabouts of the four accused of the Zubair murder case who fled a Dhaka courtroom on Sunday after being rejected bail.

Those who fled the courtroom were Khandaker Ashikul Islam, Khan Mohammad Rais, Mahabub Akram and Ishtiaq Mehbub Arup – all former Chhatra League activists of Jahangirnagar University.

Ayesha Siddiqa, assistant commissioner Kotowali Police, told the Dhaka Tribune: “We yet to trace anything; but police and the intelligence officials are trying their best to arrest them as soon as possible.”

A two-member probe committee, led by DC of DB Police Krishna Pada Roy, formed soon after the incident, had been asked to submit a report within seven working days.

Krishna Pada Roy told the Dhaka Tribune that the committee had already interrogated everyone related and involved with the case.

When asked how it happened, Anisur Rahman, ADC of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said the four accused managed to flee mainly because there was no police in the courtroom.

Zubair, an honours final year student of English and a Chhatra League activist of Jahangirnagar University, was allegedly tortured and stabbed by the accused on January 8, 2012.

He died from wounds at a hospital in the capital the following day. Hamidur Rahman, former deputy registrar of the JU, filed the murder case with Ashulia Police Station the same day.
