Accused in gold robbery case remains missing

Update : 18 Feb 2014, 07:36 PM

An accused in a gold robbery case filed by Mridul Chowdhury, a gold trader who was abducted and released early this month, has remained missing for the past one month.

Family members of the missing accused, Fahad Chowdhury Dipu, and witnesses claimed that he was abducted from Dhaka’s Kamalapur area on January 15 by the same gang that abducted Mridul.

“The same gang, which previously abducted Mridul, might have abducted my younger brother, as the nature of abduction of both incidents were almost the same,” said Kamruzzaman Titu, elder brother of the victim.

“The abductors identified themselves as administrative persons in both the incidents and no demand for ransom has been received since the abduction,” he said while talking to the Dhaka Tribune. He also added that a general dairy was lodged with Motijheel police station in connection with Dipu’s abduction.

Admitting the incident, Sub Inspector Mohammad Awal of Motijheel police, who is also the investigation officer (IO) of the general diary, said the nature of both the abductions was almost same.

According to the case statement, Mridul sent the gold to Dhaka through a train on October 3 along with his driver Babul Pal. After coming to Kamalapur Railway Station, Major Rakibul and his source Dipu forcefully picked Babul into a car, and later threw him out and fled with the gold.

Meanwhile, Major Rakibul refuted the allegation and said Mridul sought his help to recover the stolen gold and the investigation is yet to finish.
