The High Court yesterday issued a ruling, seeking explanation as to why the law secretary should not be directed to issue a circular on not using the title “judge” before one’s name except the judges of the Supreme Court.
The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain also directed Taha Mullah, a judicial officer and editor of Bangladesh Legal Decisions, a monthly publication of the Bangladesh Bar Council, not to use “judge” before his name until the disposal of the ruling.
The order was passed on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Asaduzzaman Siddique stating that according to article 152 of the constitution only Supreme Court judges are entitled to use the title. The law secretary, Bar Council secretary and Taha were made respondents in the plea.
Manzill Murshid argued for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Biswojit Roy represented the state.
