Mamun taken to court

Update : 17 Nov 2013, 03:15 AM

Giasuddin Al Mamun, a friend of BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, has been taken to the court on Sunday morning to hear the verdict in a money laundering case.

A Dhaka court is set to pronounce the verdict in the money laundering case against Tarique Rahman and Giasuddin Al Mamun.

Tarique was arrested in 2007 during the last caretaker government’s tenure. He secured bail in 2008 and went to London for medical treatment and since then has been living there with his family.

Since Saturday night security measures have been beefed up in the court area, said Md Jamal Pasha, Kotali zone assistant commissioner of the DMP.

He added: “We hope any kind of subversive activities will not be carried out in the area.”

On November 14, Judge Md Motahar Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-3 fixed the verdict date in absentia for Tarique, the elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, after the completion of arguments between the prosecution and defence. Mamun was present in the dock.

This will be the first judgment in any of the 16 cases against Tarique. According to the case statement, Tarique and Mamun siphoned off Tk204m to Singapore during the last tenure of the BNP-led alliance.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case in October 2009 and trial started in July 2011. The duo were indicted in August last year under the Money Laundering Act.

On June 23, 2011, Tarique’s younger brother Arafat Rahman Koko was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and fined Tk190m in another money laundering case.
