Awarded with capital punishment for war crimes, BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury has been sent to a condemned cell in Kashimpur Part 1 jail after the jail authorities received the court’s order.
Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury, superintendent of the jail, Wednesday said: “We received a copy of warrant for the hanging of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and then sent him to a condemned cell.”
The International Crimes Tribunal 1 on Tuesday delivered the verdict.
A jail official said the convict was found to be almost normal and he took his meals as usual in his condemned cell no 30. He was now wearing the uniform for convicts and the facilities allocated for a division-awarded prisoner had been withdrawn.
Salauddin Quader was taken to Dhaka Central Jail from Kashimpur Part 1 Jail in Gazipur the night before the verdict. After the verdict, he was taken back to Dhaka Central Jail for some time and around 7:30pm, he was sent back to Kashimpur Jail.
A convict awarded capital punishment is kept in an 80sq-ft cell which is used by a single person. Two blankets are given to the boarder of a condemned cell. One of the blankets is for sleeping and another for use as a pillow. There is an attached bathroom.
“Salauddin was kept in Chitra Bhaban of this jail since September 23 last year until Monday. He was entitled to get VIP privileges but after the verdict the privileges were cancelled as per jail code,” said Kashimpur Jailer Md Mojibur Rahman.
Of a total 1,027 prisoners at the Kashimpur Jail, at least 78 death-row convicts, including Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Delawar Hossain Sayedee and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujaheed and militant outfit JMB leader Salahuddin Salehin are currently sharing the jail with Salauddin Quader.
He has been behind bars since December 16, 2010.
