State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak has directed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take steps to deactivate all unregistered mobile phones.
He said that the BTRC has a database and automatic registration system for mobile sets manufactured, assembled, and imported in the country.
The state minister issued the directive in a meeting with senior officials of the BTRC in the capital's Agargaon office on Tuesday.
Palak said: “In the next five years, there is no alternative to taking initiatives to increase export income and investment, create employment, and increase revenue in the telecommunication and information technology sector to lay out the foundation for a smart Bangladesh with certain goals.
“Identity verification authentication service has been a revolution. Each database needs to be interoperable with each other to make this service more accessible,” he added.
The state minister emphasized that a simple technological solution to uphold law and order, boost investment, exports, and employment in the current global financial crisis might have numerous positive effects on the country.
In the meeting, BTRC Chairman Engineer Md Mohiuddin Ahmed, BTRC Spectrum Division Commissioner Engineer Sheikh Riaz Ahmed, National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) Director General Major General Ziaul Ahsan, Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh Secretary General Lt Col (Retd) Mohammad Zulfikar and others were present.
