A Dhaka court on Monday placed two youths on three-day remand each in a case filed over allegedly assaulting, threatening and demanding extortion from Dhaka Medical College Hospital Professor Dr Md Asadur Rahman.
The accused are Sabbir Hossain, 18, and Fahim Israk Labib, 20.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after a hearing in the afternoon. Rokonuzzaman, inspector of the prosecution department, confirmed the matter.
Earlier, Paltan Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Atikuzzaman, also the case’s investigating officer, produced the accused before the court and sought 10 days’ remand for each.
According to the remand plea, the accused are active members of an extortion gang operating at various locations in Dhaka and were directly or indirectly involved in the incident. Police said their custodial interrogation was necessary for a proper and impartial investigation.
According to the case statement, Dr Asadur was leaving his chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre in the capital’s Shantinagar area around 10:00pm on August 17 when he boarded a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.
Shortly after the vehicle started moving, four people intercepted it and demanded that the door be opened. Although the driver was initially told not to open it, he eventually did so.
The assailants then repeatedly beat the doctor, leaving him injured on the head, above both eyes and on various parts of his body.
Hearing his cries, people nearby rushed to the scene and detained one of the suspects, identified as Jibon, while the others fled.
Police from Paltan Model Police Station rescued the doctor and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dr Asadur filed the case with Paltan Police Station on August 18.
