A Barisal court on Sunday ordered ruling Awami League lawmaker for Barisal 2 constituency, Syed Monirul Islam Moni, to leave the court room, as he allegedly tried to gain favour by using the law minister’s name.
Witnesses said lawmaker Moni entered the running court room while talking to the law minister on his mobile phone and asked additional chief judicial magistrate Md Zahidul Kabir to attend the law minister’s call over his (Moni’s) phone.
Feeling embarrassed, the magistrate asked Moni leave the court room as a trial for a case was in progress.
When the court room’s police guards requested Moni to leave of the court room, Moni engaged in an altercation with them.
At that time, ruling party lawmaker for Barisal 1 constituency and district Awami League Secretary Advocate Talukdar Md Yunus, who was attending the court, interfered in the matter and took Moni outside the court room to bring the situation under control.
Advocate Yunus said: “The magistrate told Moni that it was not possible to attend any call during any ongoing trial in the court and asked him to leave the court room.”
Meanwhile, Moni said he first visited the district judge and then the acting chief judicial magistrate to talk about the schedule of a proposed visit by the law minister, adding that a misunderstanding was created while trying to connect the law minister with the magistrate, and that it was resolved.
Sources said case and counter case had been lodged in connection with clashes between followers of Moni and Jatiya Shamajtantrik Dal leader and Uzirpur upazila parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad Badal.
Moni was trying to get favour in the cases by using the law minister’s name, but he knocked on the wrong court room, they added.
