Update : 28 Jun 2013, 07:14 AM

War Crimes Tribunal Thursday deferred until July 18 the hearing on indictment of Jamaat-e-Islami central leader Mir Kashem Ali for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity committed in 1971.

The three-member tribunal headed by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir deferred the hearings as both side pleaded for more time.

Defence lawyer Mizanul Islam told the tribunal: “This case is important to us. We need more time to review the documents provided by prosecution team.”

Following the plea, prosecutor Zead-Al-Malum also urged for halting the hearings for a week.

On May 26, the first tribunal accepted the formal charges against the Jamaat leader and fixed June 27 for indictment hearing. The prosecution submitted the charges against the Jamaat leader, who is also the chairman of Diganta Media Corporation.

Quasem faces 14 charges including murder, abduction, torture, arson and looting during the 1971 Liberation War.

The charge sheet also says that he was the commander of the Chittagong unit of al-Badr, a group that assisted Pakistani occupation army during the war.
