The Ministry of Labour and Employment has finalised constituting the six-member “full wages commission for the garment workers.”
The names of the committee will be sent to the law ministry today to be vetted on terms and conditions of the commission. Following that, a gazette notification will be published.
The full wages commission will begin its work after the publication of the gazette.
Faizur Rahman, joint secretary of the ministry’s labour wing, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that the ministry has already finalised all names for the commission.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and labour leaders have already submitted the names of their representatives.
The joint secretary, however, refused to disclose the names of two nominees put forth by garment factory owners and labour leaders before gazette publication.
He said district judge AK Roy, the permanent chairman of the minimum wages board, will continue in his responsibilities as chairman.
Three permanent members of the wages commission – Prof Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, M Saifuddin from the garment owners’ side and AK Fazlul Haque Montu from labourers’ side – will also continue their duties.
The ministry will disclose the full wages commission by Sunday, said Faizur.
He added that as per the labour law 2006, the wages commission will begin activities from the date of the gazette publication.
The commission will finalise its recommendations within six months of gazette notification. It may also extend its time for preparing recommendations, if necessary, said the official.
