Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Ghulam Rahman Monday said the issuance of arrest warrant against BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman was delayed due to the failure and “negligence of duty” of the ACC lawyers.
“The ACC lawyers are not working in a proper way and they have failed to carry out their task which is to prove this case.
Issuing of the arrest warrant against Tarique Rahman was delayed due to their negligence of duty,” the ACC chief told journalists at the ACC headquarters.
Asked about the reason behind such negligence, the anti-graft body chief mentioned: “We are unable to provide them with proper honorarium, which could be the reason behind such negligence in the case.”
As the newsmen inquired whether the ACC would take any legal action against the lawyers, he refuted saying: “No lawyer will be working for the commission if we take any steps against them.”
He also claimed that there was no discussion held between the government and the ACC regarding the arrest warrant against Tarique, the elder son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in a money-laundering case.
A Dhaka court on May 26 issued the arrest warrant and asked the government to take necessary steps to bring him back with the help of Interpol.
ACC Deputy Director M Ibrahim filed the case against Tarique and his business partner Giasuddin Al Mamun under the Money Laundering Act accusing them of siphoning off over Tk204.3m to Singapore.
