Two Bangladeshis arrived in Dhaka yesterday after they had been deported from the Maldives as their visas were forged.
An official of Shahjalal International Airport said one of the deported immigrants, Md Arshad, had gone to the Maldives with immigration clearance from the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET).
“I went to the Maldives through a middleman named Hasan for Tk190,000,” Arshad from Tangail told the Dhaka Tribune over phone from the airport yesterday. He said he was supposed to join his work on May 7.
“Many people from my area have gone to the Maldives – I encouraged many to go and work there, but after going there I was told that my visa was not valid,” he said, adding that he was caught by police and had to stay in jail until deportation.
The airport official could not ascertain the identity of another deported Bangladeshi.
When contacted, BMET Director for immigration Mizanur Rahman yesterday said: “We are worried because visas for the Maldives cannot be checked online; we clear a Maldives immigrant against a guarantor.”
The BMET normally clears an immigrant after checking their visas whether they are genuine or forged.
