Writ on torching Quran: HC to order on May 13

The admissibility hearing before the High Court on the writ petition seeking court direction asking the ameer of Hefajat-e-Islam to explain why legal action will not be taken against him for setting fire to the copies of holy Quran on the precinct of Baitul Mukaram National Mosque while enforcing its Dhaka siege programme was concluded on Tuesday.

After hearing both sides, an HC division bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed fixed May 13 for order.

Aminur Rashid Raju, an advocate, filed the writ petition in the form of public interest litigation (PIL).

Hefajat-e Islam ameer Allama Shah Ahmed Shafi, Home Secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) have been made respondents to the case.

In his petition, the petitioner said the followers of Hefajat-e-Islam at the behest of its ameer enforced its Dhaka siege programme on Sunday. At one stage of the programme, they went berserk setting fire to Islamic books, including the holy Quran, at the kiosks on the prescient of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and in front of the CPB office.

Advocates Obaidur Rahman Setu, Khabir Uddin Bhuiyan and Bahar Uddin Al Razi appeared for the petitioner while deputy attorney general for the government.
