The High Court on Thursday granted bail to six top BNP leaders including standing committee members Mirza Abbas and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in separate cases.
The bench of justices, Salma Masud Chowdhury and Jahangir Hossain, gave the order after a hearing. The others of the main opposition party, who were temporarily given freedom, are Vice President Abdullah Al Noman, joint secretary generals Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman; and Jubo Dal President Moazzem Hossain Alal.
They were represented in the hearing by Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia and Advocate Khandaker Mahbub Hossain.
All six were detained in various cases filed for vandalism, attacking law enforcers and setting off crude bombs during political demonstrations in early march.
Of the cases, two were filed with the Paltan police station and one with Shajahanpur police station under the Speedy Trial Act, while the other four were filed with Paltan Police Station and Ramna police station, two cases apiece, under the Explosive Substance Act.
Three metropolitan magistrates sent top 10 BNP leaders to jail on April 7, including acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, following the expirations of 4 weeks anticipatory bail granted by the high court.
Earlier on April 9, barrister Rafiq and advocate Sanaullah filed separate bail petitions for the BNP leaders.
On April 21, the court granted bail for three MPs — Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barkatullah Bulu and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anny – while Fakhrul and the six were denied.
