Court rejects detained bloggers’ bail plea

Update : 18 Apr 2013, 09:06 AM

A Dhaka court Tuesday rejected the bail plea of the four detained bloggers including Asif Mohiuddin and ordered to send them to jail in a case filed against them on charges of hurting religious sentiments.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasibul Haque passed the order after hearing the bail plea.

On April 15, the court set the date for the hearing on the bail plea.

According to the reports, two separate non-First Information Report (FIR) cases were filed – one against Asif and the other against bloggers Mashiur Rahman Biplob, Russel Pervez and Subrata Adhikari Shuvo, under Section 57(2) of the Information Communication Technology Act 2006.

Asif’s lawyer Alauddin Mollah filed a petition saying he was unwell and asking for court orders for his proper treatment in custody. He also argued that Asif deserved bail because police had not found any proof of the alleged offence.

The four bloggers are Asif Mohiuddin, 26, Moshiur Rahman Biplob, 42, Russel Parvez, 35, and Subbrata Adhikari Shuvo, 24.

None of them were produced before the court Wednesday.

On April 2, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Moshiur, Russel and Subrata under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for ‘hurting religious sentiments’ with their ‘derogatory’ postings on blogs and social networking sites.

Earlier on October 1, 2011, DB police detained Asif for 18 hours and released him on the condition that he would stop blogging.
