Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar has said Section 57 of the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Act is to be removed with the passing of the Digital Security Bill.
The minister made the statement at the inauguration of a national debate program organized by Debate for Democracy at the Film Development Corporation (FDC) in Dhaka on Saturday, reports UNB.
Jabbar also said although the law would be abolished, proceedings of ongoing cases would continue.
"The word 'spying' will be omitted from Section 32 of the new law, and it will prevent digital crimes without curbing freedom of speech. Once the bill is passed, related acts may need amendments," he said.
Jabbar also said: “While this law will not be a barrier to reporting on corruption, divulging official secrets will be a punishable offence. In order to cut down on digital crimes, we must increase public awareness. The focal point of the law will be to control digital crimes instead of social media.
“Available technology should be used to ensure digital security,” he added.
Jabbar also thanked law enforcement agencies for bringing those who spread rumours during the students’ protest for safe roads, and stated that this was made possible through the use of technology.
