Tofail: Digital Security Act to stop journos from writing against MPs

Update : 30 Jan 2018, 05:13 PM
The government has formulated the Digital Security Act 2018 to protect the members of Parliament from being humiliated, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has said. “Various media reports often turn out to be humiliating for the MPs. Their images are tarnished. They are representatives of the people after all. So, this act has been formulated to prevent these [media reports],” he said on Tuesday. Tofail was replying to queries from journalists after meeting representatives of the newly-elected Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “I believe it will not be possible to stop you [journalists] even though this act aims at preventing reports against the MPs in the media,” the minister said. The cabinet approved the draft of Digital Security Act 2018 on Monday. Tofail said the act has been formulated after much thought. “The process of formulating the act has been very transparent,” he said. “The previous ICT Act was passed during the BNP-led government but there were many ambiguities. The new act clarifies them.”This article was first published on banglatribune.com
