The High Court has upheld life in prison for the mother and death sentence for her friend for the murder of a 4-year-old boy Shihab in Narsingdi in 2006.
A Narsingdi court in its 2009 verdict found the mother Afroza Sultana Nupur and her friend Gazi Abdus Salam alias Ujjal guilty of the murder.
A High Court bench of Justice Soumendra Sarker and ANM Bashir Ullah on Tuesday gave its order on the murder case after wrapping up the appeals hearing for killing Shihabur Rahman Payel. Both convicts are now in jail, Assistant Attorney General Aminur Rahman said.
According to the case documents, Shihab, son of a Singapore expatriate Sohrab Hossain Bhuiyan Mamun, went missing on December 7 while playing beside his home.
The victim's uncle Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Badal lodged a General Diary (GD) with Narsingdi police station over the incident.
On December 9, police recovered the boy's bloodstain body from a bush near of the house. In August of the next year, police submitted charge sheet against Nupur, Ujjal and his friend Harunur Rashid Gazi in the case.
Nupur in her statement given before the Narsingdi court said she met Ujjal while repairing a mobile set and built up an emotional attachment talking over mobile phone. Ujjal proposed her for marriage and she agreed.
Nupur and Ujjal decided that Ujjal will take away her son Shihab from home first and then they will start a new life elsewhere. On December 6, Ujjal took the boy with him making him unconscious but after two days told her that he had killed the boy as he did not regain sense.
The Narsingdi court recorded statements of 16 people in the case and pronounced the verdict in September 1, 2009. The court acquitted Harun of the charges.
The death reference was sent to the HC for hearing while the convicts also filed an appeal against the lower court verdict that year. The HC finished hearing this month.
