On August 10, the three-member tribunal fixed August 30 to give the order on the matter.

The Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Magsaysay Award winner had offered an unconditional apology before the tribunal for his remarks on August 9.

On June 10, Zafrullah had served a one-hour imprisonment in the courtroom and was fined Tk5,000 for criticising a verdict that penalised Bangladesh-based UK journalist David Bergman in December on contempt charges.

Based on these remarks, a petition seeking contempt proceedings was filed against the Magsaysay Award winner by three freedom fighters and two organisers of Gonojagoron Moncho. In response, the tribunal sought an explanation from Zafrullah.

He also filed a petition with the Supreme Court refusing to pay the fine imposed by the tribunal. After the hearing, the apex court quashed the tribunal’s judgement as he tendered an unconditional apology.

The freedom fighter gained prominence by being the driving force in formulating the Bangladesh National Drug Policy in 1982. The result has been the wider availability of drugs at drastically reduced prices and Bangladesh has turned into a drug exporting country.

The most significant contribution of the person is he was involved in setting up the 480-bed Bangladesh Hospital for freedom fighters and the refugees during the 1971 war.

The hospital was run by a team of Bangladeshi doctors, medical students and volunteers. Women with no previous training in healthcare were trained within days to help out the patients.
