The High Court has ordered to stop the use of Hindi songs as ringtone and welcome tune in mobile phones.
The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Mohammad Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order following a writ petition on Thursday afternoon.
Music Industry Owners Association President AKM Arifur Rahman and Secretary SK Shahid Ali filed the petition last month.
Petitioners' lawyer Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury said: "According to Import Policy 2012-15, songs of Indian films and other countries of the sub-continent cannot be imported. In line with the policy, these contents cannot be used as mobile phone ringtones and welcome tunes."
The court also issued a rule asking why the use of Hindi songs, songs of Indian Bangla films and film songs of other countries in the sub-continent as value added service of the mobile phone operators should not be declared illegal.
Cultural secretary, information secretary, home secretary, law secretary, BTRC chairman and all mobile operators have been asked to respond within four weeks.
