HC: Arrest Narail housewife beating accused by 48 hours

The High Court has ordered police administration of Narail to arrest the accused responsible for beating a housewife being tied to a tree in Narail within 48 hours.

The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order on Sunday.

The court also directed the deputy commissioner of Narail and Lohagara OC to submit a report on May 18 whether the accused were arrested.

The HC order came following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh seeking the arrest of the accused.

Narail DC, SP, Lohagara UNO and concerned all were asked to ensure treatment, security of the victim.

On April 30, husband Shafiqul Sheikh along with other family members beat his wife Bobita Khanam, 21, after she was tied to a tree on charges of theft at Salbarad village under Lohagara upazila in the district.

At one stage, Bobita loss consciousness and was then locked up inside a shop at the nearby Bazar.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent her to the Upazila Health Complex. Later she was shifted to Narail Sadar Hospital.

Following the incident, victim’s mother filed a case with Lohagara police station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Meanwhile, police have arrested two people in this connection on May 5.

The court also issued a rule on the government asking that why legal action should not be taken against the accused.

Lawyer Monjur Morshed represented the petitioners and Deputy Attorney General Taposh Kumar Biswas stood for the plaintiff.
