Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday urged the developed nations to stop spending on weapons of mass destruction and instead invest the money in health and education to make a peaceful world.
She made the call when the visiting Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) Professor Folf-Dieter Heur called on her at her official residence Ganobhaban.
PM’s special assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil briefed the reporters after the meeting.
Shail said that the Prime minister told Folf-Dieter that her government has taken steps to promote science education.
She said during its 1996-2001 tenure the AL government took initiative to set up 12 science and technology universities. She also mentioned that the government is making sure that students’ interest grow in science education particularly in Physics.
She said Bangladesh needs more science teachers, especially in Physics. She sought the cooperation of the CERN to train science teachers of Bangladesh.
Hasina said that for a long the science education and search was neglected in the country. But she said that during her 1996-2001 tenure the government increased the allocation for science based research works significantly.
She said that due to her government’s various time befitting and pragmatic steps the number of science students at graduate level increased to 2.2 million from 1.1 million in the last five years.
Professor Folf-Dieter Heur recalled the contribution of renowned physicist Sattyan Bose and eminent nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah to the field of science.
