The "World Kidney Day-2025" will be observed in the country and elsewhere across the globe on Thursday, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of sound kidneys.
This year's theme of the day is "Are your kidney ok? Detect early, protect kidney health" a PID press release said on Wednesday.
Bangladesh will observe the day with various programs, including rallies, discussions, and seminars on kidney diseases and their prevention methods.
On the eve of the occasion, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message on Wednesday, extending his best wishes for the success of all programs organized in observance of World Kidney Day.
In his message, Dr Yunus said: "The kidneys help remove waste products from the human body, maintain normal blood electrolyte levels, and play a crucial role in the production of red blood cells."
Highlighting that kidney disease is a silent killer, the chief adviser noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts it may become the fourth leading cause of death globally by 2040.
"The number of kidney disease patients is also rising rapidly in Bangladesh. Various factors, including an unhealthy and uncontrolled lifestyle, diabetes, high blood pressure, excessive use of painkillers, and food adulteration, contribute to the increasing prevalence of this disease," he added.
"Although modern treatment for kidney disease is available in the country, it remains highly expensive. Therefore, raising public awareness about both prevention and treatment is essential," he said.
He further said that the interim government, formed through the students-workers-people uprising, is actively working to ensure quality healthcare for all citizens.
"I believe that the observance of World Kidney Day 2025 will play a significant role in raising public awareness about the treatment and prevention of kidney diseases," Dr Yunus concluded.
