Malaria remains a significant health concern in the hill districts of Bangladesh, particularly in Bandarban.

To eradicate the problem, 10,000 individuals residing in 100 villages across Lama and Alikadam upazilas will receive malaria vaccinations, for the first time in the country.

Sources said that a research program has been initiated in Bandarban to assess the effectiveness of a new vaccine in combatting malaria.

This information was disclosed during a press briefing held at the Lama Upazila Parishad meeting room on Monday afternoon.

Leading the briefing was Professor Dr Md Abul Faiz, former director-general and chief researcher of the Directorate General of Health Services, who presented the findings of the research.

Dr Faiz highlighted that approximately 10,000 residents spanning 100 villages in Lama and Alikadam upazilas will receive free malaria vaccinations and medications in four phases starting next year as part of the ongoing initiative.

The government has set a target to eliminate malaria nationwide by 2030, underscoring the importance of proactive measures such as mass vaccination campaigns in regions like Bandarban where malaria transmission remains prevalent.
