Covid-19: Bangladesh records 6 more deaths, 266 new cases

Update : 17 Nov 2021, 08:31 PM

Bangladesh tallied another six deaths from coronavirus and 266 new infections on Wednesday.

Besides, 257 more patients recovered from the disease in the 24 hours till 8am on Wednesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The latest additions took the country’s death toll to 27,934, the total caseload to 1,573,214 and the total number of recoveries to 1,537,224.

A total of 19,670 samples were tested in the 24-hour period, yielding an infection rate of 1.35%. The overall infection rate in the country stands at 14.77%.

The seven-day moving average of single-day deaths in Bangladesh was four on Wednesday.

Sylhet reported three deaths, Dhaka two, and Rajshahi one. Five of them died at different hospitals, while one died at home.

Of the new patients, Dhaka logged 205 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Rajshahi with 19.

Meanwhile, the latest figures have put the recovery rate at 97.71%. The mortality rate remained static at 1.78%.

Around 52.5 million people in the country have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Among them, 33.73 million have received both doses, the DGHS data shows.

Bangladesh has been witnessing infection rates below or around 2% for more than a month. The country last recorded an infection rate of over 3% on October 4, when the figure stood at 3.19%.

However, according to experts, the flatline should not be a reason for complacency, as many countries are seeing a surge in infections yet again.

Bangladesh reported its first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year. The first death was reported 10 days later.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has so far claimed over 5.13 million lives and infected more than 255.26 million people throughout the world, according to Worldometer.

More than 230.74 million people have recovered from the disease, which has affected 224 countries and territories across the planet.
