Update : 29 Dec 2022, 09:11 PM

Health Minister Zahid Maleque has requested people not to panic over the new variant of Omicron and asked everyone to wear masks, urging them to get vaccinated against Covid-19.

The minister was speaking at a program in Manikganj on Thursday.

Referring to the emergence of the new sub-variant BF7 of Omicron, the minister said that the variant has been detected in neighboring countries and the US.

“As 98% of people in the country are now vaccinated, there is no reason to panic,” the minister added.

Zahid Maleque said that the four Chinese nationals who were detected with Covid-19 at Dhaka airport are now in isolation. Therefore, they can't pose any risk to Bangladesh, he said, adding that samples taken from the passengers are now at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) for genome sequencing.

Details on their infection will be known in a day or two, he said.

He said that the border ports have been alerted and hospitals have been kept ready to tackle any untoward situation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday directed the airports in Bangladesh to start Covid-19 tests due to an increase in the spread of the new variant in some nearby countries.

Passengers coming from countries where infections have increased, especially China, must be tested, she said during a cabinet meeting at her office.

On Monday, four China returnees tested positive for Covid-19 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and were sent to  isolation at the Dhaka North City Corporation Hospital.

The country reported 22 more Covid cases in the 24 hours till Thursday morning, taking the total caseload to 2,037,089, according to the DGHS.
