Bangladesh’s daily coronavirus deaths dropped below the 100-mark on Saturday after 80 fatalities were reported in the previous 24 hours, taking the overall toll to 25,926, according to the health authorities.

Saturday’s death count is the lowest since June 26, when 77 fatalities were reported.

Maintaining a downward trend, 3,436 new infections were logged in the 24-hour span, taking the total caseload to 1,489,589.

Public health experts said the downtrend was the outcome of the strict restrictions imposed until August 19.

“There might be another spike in cases in two to three weeks from now as restrictions on public movement have been lifted,” Virologist Nazrul Islam told Dhaka Tribune.

Mushtaq Hossain, an adviser to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), echoed Islam’s comments.

“Right now, we are seeing Covid-19 infections in clusters. If the health authorities can prevent cluster infections, Covid-19 infections and deaths are less likely to rise again in a few weeks,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
