The death toll from the coronavirus infection in Bangladesh has crossed a grim milestone of 19,000 as the country continues battle a deadly second wave induced by the Delta variant.
The health authorities have registered 195 new deaths in the 24 hours to Saturday morning a day, taking the total toll to 19,046
As the pandemic rips through the country in a fresh wave, over 1,000 people died in the past six days. Fatalities in Bangladesh crossed 18,000 on July 19.
Dhaka counted 68 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Khulna with 41 fatalities.

Chittagong division reported 36 deaths while Rajshahi 18, Rangpur 16, Mymensingh 10, Barisal five, Sylhet one.

The caseload surged to 1,153,344 after 6,780 people tested positive for the virus until 8 am Saturday, according to the latest data by the Directorate General of Health Services.
Dhaka logged 3,999 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 1,126 cases and Rajshahi with 407.
A total of 20,536 samples were tested during in the 24 hours to Saturday, for a positivity rate of 32.55%.
The overall infection rate in Bangladesh stands at 13.55%.
On the other hand, another 9,723 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recovery to 988,339.

Bangladesh reported its first cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, in March last year.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4.16 million lives and infected over 194 million people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
More than 176 million people have recovered from the disease, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
