Bangladesh has recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases in a day – 8,822 – since the pandemic broke out in the country in March last year.
Between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday, the health directorate reported the new cases which took the total to 913,258.
The previous highest tally of single-day caseload was reported on Monday when 8,364 people tested positive for the deadly virus.
At the same time, 115 more deaths from Covid-19 were also recorded.
Covid-19 deaths in Bangladesh have remained above the grim 100 mark for the past four days.
With the latest development, the total number of fatalities reached 14,503 in the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 25.13%. As many as 35,105 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 565 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.
To date, 6,608,927 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.82%.
With the alarming rise in Covid deaths and cases across the country, the government is all set to impose a seven-day-long stricter lockdown across Bangladesh from 6am Thursday to stop the further spread of the virus.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Wednesday.
Of the 115 deceased – 72 men and 43 women – 30 were from Khulna division, 23 each from Rajshahi and Chittagong, 17 from Dhaka, 11 from Rangpur, six each from Mymensingh, three from Sylhet, and two from Barisal division.
Of them, 106 died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country while nine died at home.
Fifty-seven of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 25 between 51 and 60, 17 between 41 and 50, 12 aged between 31 and 40, and four were aged between 21 and 30.
So far, 10,325 men (71.19%) and 4,178 women (28.81%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
Since the beginning, 7,579 people have died in Dhaka division, 2,750 in Chittagong, 1,034 in Rajshahi, 1,265 in Khulna, 423 in Barisal, 527 in Sylhet, 608 in Rangpur, and 317 in Mymensingh.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59%.
The health authorities said 4,550 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 816,250 patients – 89.38% – have made full recovery across the country.
Currently, 45,728 people are in isolation and 67,282 are quarantined.
On March 8 last year, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,955,000 lives and infected as many as 182,675,000 people across the world till Wednesday evening, according to worldometer.
As many as 167,276,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
