Covid: 5,683 new cases, 58 more deaths with 7-day moving average rising further

Another 2,364 patients recovered from the infectious disease

Bangladesh has registered 5,683 new Covid-19 cases, taking the tally so far to 630,277.

The death toll climbed to 9,213 after 58 fatalities were recorded in a 24-hour time frame until Saturday morning, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a press release.

The latest numbers indicate a drop in the daily caseload from Friday’s 6,830 while virus fatalities keep climbing. 

According to official data, the country on Saturday recorded its highest ever seven-day moving average of daily Covid deaths – 49.14 – since the pandemic broke out in March, 2020. It was 46.43 on Friday.

Meanwhile, another 2,364 patients recovered from Covid-19 through treatment at home and in hospital care, bringing the total recovery count to 549,775 (87.23%).

Of the 58 deceased – 38 men and 20 women – 39 were from Dhaka division, 12 from Chittagong, three from Khulna, and two from and one each from Rangpur and Mymensingh divisions.

All the victims died while undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country.

So far, 6,925 men (75.17%) and 2,288 women (24.83%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 5,267 people have died in Dhaka division, 1,664 in Chittagong, 508 in Rajshahi, 592 in Khulna, 276 in Barisal, 327 in Sylhet, 377 in Rangpur, and 202 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.46%.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 23.15%. The overall infection rate in the country stands at 13.26%.

As many as 24,548 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 227 authorized labs – government and private – across the country.

Currently, 12,738 people are in isolation and 39,549 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019, and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 2,852,000 lives and infected 105,426,000 people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to worldometer.

As many as 130,944,000 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 219 countries and territories across the planet.
