Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said Bangladesh is managing Covid-19 better than the US and Europe since the mortality rate in Bangladesh is lower compared to those countries.
“The mortality rate in Bangladesh is 1.5% whereas the mortality rate is 6% in the US and 10% in Europe. This is an indicator that we have done some good work,” he said.
The minister made this remark to the press at the secretariat on Wednesday.
While a number of individuals in the health sector are facing backlashes for various irregularities, the health minister opined that the health sector has become better.
He pointed out that the number of critical patients has come down significantly and therefore very few patients need to be hospitalized.
“People with Covid-19 are relying on telemedicine and taking care of themselves at home. It means the health sector has become better,” he said.
He also said that the health authority will talk to the prime minister about appointing a new DGHS chief if needed.
On Wednesday, 37 Covid-19 patients died at different hospitals and five at home, according to DGHS data.
The death toll from Covid-19 in Bangladesh climbed to 2,751 on Wednesday with 42 more people succumbing to the disease in the past 24 hours.
Furthermore, 2,744 fresh cases of Covid-19 were confirmed from Tuesday to Wednesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 213,254.
