Bangladesh among the South Asian countries, had the lowest number in terms of recovery rates from the beginning that changed on May 3 as the number of patients recovered from Covid-19 has jumped from 177 to 1,063 in just one day.
Standing on the 60th day since the first infection, Bangladesh has reported total recoveries of 1,403 cases on Tuesday, some 12.83% of total confirmed cases while the rate was 2.01% and 2.11% on May 2 and May 1 respectively.
On April 30, the rate of recovered patients compared to the number of infected was at 2.08%. The percentage continues to fall significantly almost every day with 2.11%, 2.15%, 2.21%, 2.25%, 2.26%, 2.39% and 2.58% recorded on the previous days respectively.
The rate was below 3% last month that changed on May 3 when the health authorities reported the sudden jump in coronavirus recovery cases.
Dr Nasima Sultana, additional director general (administration) of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on May 3 explained about the jump and said: “The clinical management committee has set new guidelines on determining recovered patients which, among other things, now also take into account patients who have recovered at home.”
The authorities also unveiled a list containing numbers of recovered patients from different hospitals.
On April 28, during virtual daily health bulletin, Dr Nasima said that health authorities were yet to confirm the actual number of recoveries in the country, as some of the infected patients recovered at home and they were looking into it to update the recovery cases count.
Standing on the 60th day on Wednesday Bangladesh reported the highest number of 193 recoveries in a single day on Tuesday.
Fifth among South Asian countries in recovery count
Bangladesh had confirmed a total of 8,790 positive cases along with only 1,77 cases of recovery till May 2.
Now the South Asian country has confirmed 10,929 positive cases.
Bangladesh is the second fastest country to cross the 10,000 mark in 58 days following Pakistan in 57 days.
Other countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have been witnessing high rates of recovery than Bangladesh with only 12.83% recovered patients.
Bangladesh stands at fifth position with 1403 recovered cases, with only India, Sri Lanka, and Maldives recording lower recovery rates in 60 days since the first detection of coronavirus in their respective countries.
2nd highest death count and positive cases in 60 days
According to data compiled from World Health Organization (WHO), respective health ministries, and reputed media outlets of eight South Asian nations, Bangladesh recorded the second highest death count with 183 cases, only below Pakistan who reported 269 deaths in 60 days after detecting coronavirus.
The death tally is followed by Afghanistan with 42 deaths, India with 27, in the 60 days period among South Asian nations.
Reporting its first case on February 26, Pakistan, however, recorded the highest number of positive cases, 12,723, within the duration.
Meanwhile, countries such as Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Nepal did not record any deaths from the deadly Covid-19 within 60 days of first detection. Maldives reported only one death during the 60 days’ timeframe.
According to the local media reports, authorities in Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives, all the tourism-based countries, initiated strict measures including enforcing lockdown, social-distancing, closing entry points into the country, from the very beginning of the global pandemic.
Sri Lanka first reported its Covid-19 case on January 27, a 44-year-old Chinese woman who came to the country from Hubei Province in China, the reported birthplace of the contagious disease.
Later, Sri Lanka confirmed its second patient on March 11, almost 45 days later.
In Nepal, a 19-year-old woman, who had returned from France via Qatar, was tested coronavirus positive on March 17. This was the first case in two months and the second case of the country.
In Maldives, Bangladeshi migrants have surpassed the number of infected locals within the island’s territory. As many as 283 Bangladeshi expatriates were tested positive among a total of 557 Covid-19 cases, some 50.81% in the country, while the locals reporting only 35.19% cases as of Tuesday.
Bangladesh started experiencing rise in positive cases, as the country started conducting more tests since the fourth week of first detection.
