Shilpi Rani Pal -- a housewife of Sreemangal’s Dakkhin Uttarsur village-- was an expecting mother. On Sunday midnight, Ranajit Das, Shilpi’s husband, found her critically ill as her water broke and amid the coronavirus lockdown they were caught in an impossible mission to get her to a hospital.

The panicked family members tried hard to manage at least a vehicle to take her but failed repeatedly while Shilpi Rani’s health condition was worsening by each moment.

There was no traffic jam on the road, but there was no possibility to get a vehicle at that time either as the shutdown is on in the area like other parts of the country due to the coronavirus pandemic. He had to take Shilpi to the hospital at any cost and as soon as possible.

Finding no other way, Ranajit and his family finally decided to call Sreemangal’s RAB Company Commander, MD Anowar Hossain around 12:00 am, seeking help for his wife.

Within a few minutes, the official himself came to her house and as she was not able to walk, the officer carried her to the vehicle and later to the operation theatre, located on the third floor of the Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex.

Explaining the incident, Ranajit Das said: “At least 15 to 20 drivers declined to take us and we had no other way except calling RAB to save Shilpi’s life. I am astonished by SP Anwar’s humane qualities. If he had not helped us we might have lost the mother and child.”

Sazzad Chowdhury, health officer of Upazila Health Complex said, he was equally astonished and grateful to the officer as, without his prompt action, the health condition of the expecting mother would have been far more complex.

Contacted, RAB-9 Company Commander, ASP Anwar Hossain said: “I was patrolling an adjacent area when I received their call for help. Obviously it was my duty to help the family and ensure proper treatment to the mother and child.”

“I am happy that I could reach the place soon was able to help them,” the polite officer added.
