Coronavirus: 16 doctors in Bangladesh test positive in a day

Tally reaches 100 with most cases from Dhaka and Narayanganj

Update : 17 Apr 2020, 07:46 PM

With the curve mounting, 16 more doctors tested positive for Covid-19 across the country in the past 24 hours until Friday evening, according to the Bangladesh Doctors’ Foundation (BDF).

The latest figure pushed up the tally of infected doctors to 100 till 9pm on Friday.

Shockingly, most of them are from Dhaka and Narayanganj, the two major clusters of community transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 — a new strain of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

In a post on Facebook, the BDF’s founder and chief administrator, Dr Nirupam Das, disclosed the updates.

The number of doctors diagnosed with Covid-19 on Wednesday and Thursday was 65 and 84, respectively.

Though Dr Nirupam’s post did not mention how many doctors were currently being treated at ICUs, he had told Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday that only one physician was receiving treatment at an ICU until then.

Bangladesh reported the first death of a doctor on Wednesday. Previously, a doctor died in Dhaka on Sunday after showing Covid-19 symptoms, which include fever, cough, and breathing problems.

On Friday, Bangladesh reported the highest single-day deaths from Covid-19 and new cases. With 15 new fatalities, the death toll climbed to 75.

Also, 266 more people tested positive over the same period, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 1,838.
