Coronavirus: Special flight brings home over 300 Bangladeshis from Saudi Arabia

They have been kept on a 14-day quarantine at the Ashkona Hajj Camp near the airport

A special flight has flown in over 300 Bangladeshis from Saudi Arabia amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The chartered flight of Saudia Airlines from Jeddah landed at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 9:10pm on Wednesday, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Chairman Air Vice Marshal M Mafidur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.

The flight was carrying a total of 312 passengers, said CAAB Public Relations Officer Mohammad Sohel Kamruzzaman.

All of them have been kept on a 14-day mandatory quarantine at the Hajj Camp at Ashkona, said the airport Health Officer Dr AKM Rasel Ahmed.

“However, none of them had any symptoms of coronavirus during the primary health check-up,” he added.

According to Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) sources, of the returnees, 236 were imprisoned at the detention centres in Saudi Arabia while the others had gone to perform Umrah.

The CAAB has suspended passenger flights from and to all countries, except for China, till April 30.

As of Wednesday, Bangladesh has confirmed 1,231 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 50 after four new fatalities were reported.

The fast spreading Covid-19 has so far killed 128,000 people in more than 200 countries and territories.
