Strict action will be taken against those opening fake Facebook pages or groups in the name of Bangladesh Police.
Police informed in a press note on Saturday, that during recent times some miscreants are opening Facebook pages impersonating police officials or creating Facebook groups using part or whole of the Bangladesh police name or logo.
These types of pages are trying to spread rumours and misinformation regarding Covid-19 and creating confusion among people.
Many people are even sharing the posts made by these fake pages mistaking them as authentic ones.
The press note sent from the police headquarters urged the public to be aware about this Facebook gang.
Strict legal action will be taken against these Facebook pages, groups, and site administrators, said police.
The press note also said that if someone notices this type of fake or suspicious page, they are requested to send the links to the Bangladesh Police official Facebook page inbox (https://www.facebook.com/BangladeshPoliceOfficialPage/).
There have been many incidents of rumours across the country.
On Wednesday, police arrested a man for reportedly spreading rumours over coronavirus from Bagmara Main Road area, Khulna. The arrestee made a video on YouTube claiming Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader contracted the deadly coronavirus.
On March 28, police arrested six people from Dhaka’s Shahbagh and Ramna areas for spreading rumours and misleading information using leaflets.
The leaflets said: “Covid-19 does not affect Muslims. This is not a pandemic and the virus is not infectious. This is the wrath of God on infidels. Those who bar others from going to mosques will go to hell,” amongst other things.
Also, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has formed a cyber verification cell to prevent any rumours regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
