Within a week of assuming office, the BNP government has removed previous administrators and appointed new administrators in six city corporations, including Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation. All of the newly appointed administrators are leaders of the BNP.

After taking charge, Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said elections to local government bodies would be held “as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, the Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives issued notifications appointing the new administrators.

Following the ouster of the Awami League government in the July 2024 mass uprising, the interim government dismissed city corporation mayors and appointed administrators. After BNP came to power through the 13th National Parliament Election, new political appointees have again been named to the posts.

Dhaka South City Corporation

Former DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh left the country days before the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.

During the interim government, several officials, including Shahjahan Mia and later Md Mahmudul Hasan, served as administrators.

Shafiqul Islam Khan has been appointed administrator of DNCC. He was a BNP candidate for Dhaka-15 in the 13th parliamentary elections.

He is a vice-president of the central committee of Jubo Dal and previously served as member secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Jubo Dal.

Former DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam, who assumed office in 2019, was arrested following the 2024 political upheaval and remains in jail. During the interim period, Mohammad Ejaz and later Suraiya Akhtar Jahan served as administrators.

Gazipur City Corporation

Shaukat Hossain Sarkar, president of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP, has been appointed administrator of Gazipur City Corporation.

Gazipur City Corporation was established in 2013. During the Awami League tenure, Jahangir Alam served as mayor. Under the interim government, Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury was appointed administrator.

Narayanganj City Corporation

Sakhawat Hossain Khan, senior vice-president of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP, has been appointed administrator of Narayanganj City Corporation.

He was previously a BNP candidate in the 2016 Narayanganj City Corporation election, where Awami League candidate Selina Hayat Ivy defeated him. During the interim government, Abu Nasr Mohammad Abdullah served as administrator.

Sylhet City Corporation

Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, president of Sylhet District BNP, has been appointed administrator of Sylhet City Corporation.
