The interim government has decided to appoint full-time administrators in city corporations, districts, upazilas, and municipalities.
This was announced by AF Hassan Ariff, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Land during a meeting with members of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The adviser noted that administrators have previously been appointed from among government officials in city corporations, district councils, and upazila councils, said: "There is naturally some delay in services due to a lack of manpower. Soon, you will see that we are taking steps to appoint full-time administrators here.
"We understand that it is not feasible to provide services for such large entities as city corporations, district councils, upazila councils, or municipalities with just a temporary administrator. There are ongoing responsibilities and duties that need to be fulfilled. For this, a full-time administrator is essential. We are taking steps in this regard, and you will be informed shortly."
In September, the councillors of 12 city corporations and 323 municipalities across Bangladesh were removed.
A notification by the Local Government Division, under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, announced the decision on Monday.
The city corporations are Dhaka South City Corporation, Dhaka North City Corporation, Chittagong City Corporation, Khulna City Corporation, Rajshahi City Corporation, Sylhet City Corporation, Barisal City Corporation, Narayanganj City Corporation, Comilla City Corporation, Rangpur City Corporation, Gazipur City Corporation, and Mymensingh City Corporation.
In another notification, the removal of the councillors of 323 municipalities was also announced.
Meanwhile, 61 Zilla Parishad members were also removed, except from the hill districts.
On August 19, the government removed the mayors of 12 city corporations, including Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam, from their positions.
