Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has announced the dissolution of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) following the recommendations of the Revenue Reform Commission.
He made remarks about these on Tuesday, in a national address marking Independence Day and Eid-ul-Fitr.
He said that the NBR will be replaced by two separate entities: the National Revenue Policy Board, responsible for policy formulation and the National Revenue Collection Division, tasked with implementation.
Dr Yunus emphasized that this reform will prevent preferential individuals from evading billions in tax revenue.
He expressed hope that future administrations will uphold this policy.
Simplification of passport issuance
Dr Yunus also highlighted significant improvements in the passport issuance process.
He announced the abolition of police verification for passport applications, making the process more efficient.
Since the removal of this police verification requirement, 70,000 new passports that had been delayed due to pending police reports have been swiftly delivered to applicants
To further streamline the system, electronic passports (e-passports) have been introduced, enabling faster issuance.
Additionally, home delivery of e-passports is now available within the country.
Efforts are underway to ensure that, in the future, all applicants can receive their passports at home.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress, Dr Yunus acknowledged the dedication of officials involved in implementing these reforms.
New mobile app for Hajj pilgrims
Dr Yunus recognized Hajj as one of the most profound spiritual journeys for Muslims, noting that Bangladeshi pilgrims often face challenges such as language barriers, health risks, overcrowding, administrative hurdles and logistical difficulties.
To enhance the Hajj experience and ensure a smooth journey, the interim government has developed a mobile application to assist pilgrims before, during and after their travel.
This Bangla-language app will provide real-time guidance, facilitate financial transactions through a government-backed special debit card and include a luggage tracking system to prevent loss.
Additionally, pilgrims will receive daily schedules, travel instructions and reminders of prayers through their mobile phones.
The app will offer historical information on sacred sites, access to a call center for inquiries and instant medical assistance if required.
Pilgrims will also be able to share their feedback and suggestions through the platform.
Dr Yunus assured that all necessary measures have been incorporated to ensure that logistical challenges do not overshadow the spiritual essence of Hajj.
Starlink partnership for high-speed internet
Dr Yunus announced that within the next three months, a commercial agreement will be signed with Starlink to introduce affordable high-speed internet in Bangladesh, ushering in a digital revolution.
Once operational, Starlink will provide ultra-high-speed internet access to every village, island, and remote mountainous region.
Dr Yunus asserted that this development will eliminate any future government's ability to restrict internet services, ensuring unrestricted access to information for all citizens.
The introduction of Starlink will pave the way for global-standard education, healthcare and economic opportunities across Bangladesh.
He emphasized that the younger generation, regardless of their location, will have the chance to thrive as global citizens.
Concluding his address, Dr Yunus extended Eid greetings to the nation, urging citizens to celebrate peacefully with their families.
He encouraged people to visit the graves of their ancestors, support underprivileged families and introduce their children to those in need, fostering a spirit of compassion.
He called upon all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, to remain steadfast in unity against divisive forces, praying to Allah for continued strength and solidarity.
