Govt approves renaming of BSMMU to ‘Bangladesh Medical University’

The meeting also granted final approval for renaming Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet

The government has decided to rename Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) as "Bangladesh Medical University."

In this regard, the Advisory Council has given policy and final approval to the draft of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.

The decision was made on Thursday during a meeting of the Advisory Council at the chief adviser’s office in Tejgaon.

According to the Cabinet Division, the Advisory Council has given final approval to the draft of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division.

Through this ordinance, BSMMU will be renamed as Bangladesh Medical University.

Additionally, the Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 has also been approved, which will change its name to Khulna Medical University.

Similarly, the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 has been approved, renaming it as Sylhet Medical University.
