Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul expressed hope that the trial proceedings over the July genocide would be completed in the trial court before the next national election, emphasizing the government's commitment to ensuring justice for the brutal killings of students and civilians.
"Though this is a matter of the court, we hope and believe that at the speed we are moving forward, Insha Allah, we will be able to complete at least the trial proceedings in the trial court before the next polls," he said at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday.
Dr Nazrul assured that the trial proceedings are progressing smoothly without negligence and reiterated the government’s pledge to bring justice for the inhumane genocide.
The government is prioritizing the International Crime Tribunal (ICT), which plays a larger role in the trials.
He added that investigations are proceeding quickly, and hearings are expected to begin in March.
Dr Nazrul also expressed optimism about completing all reform tasks within the interim government’s tenure.
Speaking at the same event, he outlined a four-phase reform plan, including the submission of recommendations by the reform commissions, discussions based on these proposals, formulating laws, and implementing them.
He said that the success of these reforms depends on the consensus of political parties.
He highlighted that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus had addressed the nation on December 16, saying that elections could be held by the end of 2025 after completing minor reforms, while more extensive reforms might require an additional six months.
Dr Nazrul explained that talks with political parties would focus on identifying both minimum and expected reforms.
