The interim government’s Home Adviser, Major General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, has stated that legal action will be taken against the officials involved in attempting to absolve the accused in the murder cases of Sabuj and Shahjahan, who were killed during the anti-discrimination movement in the New Market area.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday during a visit to St Mary’s Cathedral in Kakrail on Christmas Eve, he mentioned that the officer responsible for the act would be brought under the law, despite currently being on leave.
He assured that the officer would not remain on leave for long and action would be taken against them.
The Home Adviser also emphasized that such actions would never be tolerated, as the investigating officer had violated the procedure by submitting a charge sheet incorrectly.
He added that anyone involved in such actions would be held accountable under the law.
In relation to previous cases of attempted absolution, he referred to a report about the involvement of former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s former Private Industry and Investment Advisor Salman F Rahman and former Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre, Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan.
An officer had reportedly prepared a final report removing them and had attempted to submit it to the court without proper authorization.
This incident was uncovered before the case could reach the court and an investigation is underway.
The murders of Sabuj and Shahjahan occurred on July 16, during the student protests in New Market, Dhaka.
A case was filed the following day, with Sabuj’s cousin Nur Nabi and Shahjahan’s mother Ayesha Begum as the complainants.
Investigations continue into the involvement of those accused in the murders.
