Senior lawyer Ehsanul Haque Shomaji has been appointed as special prosecutorial adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs for one year.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued the appointment notification on Wednesday.
Earlier, on August 27, the Law Ministry appointed Shomaji as Dhaka metropolitan public prosecutor (PP). However, he declined to take up the responsibility.
Subsequently, in November, media reports revealed that he had been appointed as a special adviser to the prosecution team of the International Crimes Tribunal.
He also refused to accept that position mentioning his inability to do so after receiving the files of some accused individuals.
One month later, Shomaji is now appointed as special adviser to the legal team of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to the notification, Ehsanul Haque Shomaji will serve in this position on a contractual basis for one year, provided he relinquishes any other professional engagements, business affiliations, or roles in public, semi-public, or private organizations.
When contacted, Shomaji, who is currently in Singapore for his wife’s treatment, said: "I am aware of the appointment through various media sources. I will return to Bangladesh on December 22 and review the official notification before discussing the matter with the authorities."
Shomaji previously served as the Dhaka metropolitan public prosecutor and the public prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission during the caretaker government rule from 2007 to 2009.
In these roles, he represented the state and prosecution in criminal courts and handled all cases.
He earned his LLB in 1984 and LLM in 1985 from the University of Dhaka.
Shomaji was enrolled as a lawyer on October 30, 1986 and became a member of the Dhaka Bar Association on November 4 of the same year.
He was enlisted in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on April 7, 1988 and obtained membership in the Supreme Court Bar Association on January 21, 1992.
