Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Mainul Islam has emphasized the need to transform the police into a people-centered force by embracing the spirit of the July Uprising and learning from the past.

He said this on Saturday while addressing the Metropolitan Police’s monthly crime review meeting for October, held at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium. The meeting was presided over by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan.

The IGP paid tribute to all martyrs of the student-people uprising and expressed deep sympathy to their families. He also honored the sacrifices of police personnel who lost their lives or were injured while maintaining law and order.

Describing the police as a vital state agency, the IGP stated that serving the people is its primary mission. He called on police officers to work as a team, identifying crime hotspots and collaborating with local citizen committees to prevent crimes effectively.

“No crime should be concealed. Real criminals must be arrested, regardless of their identity. However, it’s crucial to ensure that innocent individuals are not harassed in legal proceedings,” he said.

The IGP emphasized the importance of intelligence-based policing to prevent crimes like theft, robbery, and the activities of juvenile gangs. He urged officers to gather intelligence and act before crimes occur.

Addressing officers in charge of police stations, he stressed that police stations are the heart of public service. “Those who come to police stations are either complainants, victims, or witnesses. Treat them with respect and provide proper service to uphold the image of the police,” he said.

The IGP acknowledged the improvements in Dhaka’s traffic management and provided further directives to enhance the system. He also highlighted the necessity of regular and modern training programs for all levels of police personnel to boost professional efficiency.

DMP Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan said that with a population of 25 million, Dhaka Metropolitan Police is always prepared to serve its citizens. He acknowledged the improvements in law and order since his tenure began and urged officers to maintain professionalism to address future challenges.

He directed police officials to intensify efforts to curb theft, robbery, extortion, and other crimes while ensuring thorough investigations and bringing actual perpetrators to justice. Enhancing patrolling, setting up check posts, and engaging with communities were highlighted as key measures.

During the meeting, Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruq Hossain presented crime data for October 2024, covering incidents like robbery, theft, murder, drug and arms recovery, and road accidents.

The IGP concluded the meeting by awarding officers of various ranks for their outstanding performance in October.
