State Minister for Information Mohammad Ali Arafat has said that social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp have been temporarily shut down to prevent violence and casualties.
He said this in response to a question at an urgent press conference held in the Parliament building's tunnel on Sunday afternoon.
The minister explained that around the world, social media has been used to spread rumors, increase tension, and incite violence and conflicts, leading to deaths and casualties. To prevent such incidents, they have taken this temporary measure.
He emphasized that their actions are in the greater interest and are not intended to block or silence anyone or to stop anything.
The primary goal is to prevent casualties, tension, violence, and conflict, as it is the government's responsibility.
He also mentioned that similar actions have been taken by other countries around the world.
Earlier on Sunday afternoon, there were reports that mobile internet was not working properly across the country.
Many people reported that they could not use Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram through mobile internet.
Additionally, users reported that they could not access any websites using mobile internet.
Later, access to social media was also blocked through broadband internet.
