Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen has said people should be more vigilant about their safety to prevent major mishaps as saving lives becomes tough even with as many as 10 burn units without awareness.

He was speaking as the chief guest at an event titled “Increasing awareness of CPR among the general public” on the occasion of the 104th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, organized by Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex in Dhaka on Sunday.

Samanta said burn injuries did not kill those who died in last month’s Bailey Road fire – they died from suffocation. “Many of them would still be alive today if they had received proper treatment immediately.”

The minister continued: “Accidents can happen at any time. At any place, people can get sick, or get heart attacks. CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is very important for this.

“The government will work with Swachip to teach people how to do CPR not only in Dhaka but across the country… The main task of doctors is to make people aware.”

Regarding Bangabandhu, Dr Samanta Lal Sen said: “If we have even the slightest sense of humanity, we should remember the father of the nation with reverence.”

After the discussion, CPR training was given to traders and employees of Bashundhara City Shopping Complex.

Speakers said that hundreds of thousands of people come to shop at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex every day. If someone has a sudden heart attack, and the shopping mall’s staff know about CPR, then the victim can be easily saved.
